item8

a collaborative hypernarrative fiction

Sunday, 25-Oct-2026 19:35:00 EDT — the day of the snapshot

What began as one text, collaboratively written by some chums in a TMN-sponsored conference called artist, on an item numbered eight, is preserved here entire: every response, in the order the river ran, September 2, 1997 to August 31, 1998, when the cessation of the exercise — completely arbitrarily — was announced.

This site is a snapshot, not a revival. Nothing here is open for posting; the water stopped in 1998 and stays stopped. It has two faces, because the work had two lives: web, the house your editor built for it at coelaboration.com in 2000, and cmd, the amber screen where it was actually written and read, one response at a time, at a Caucus prompt. Flip the switch at the top. Both are the same snapshot.

Please hesitate not to read it as it was read: downstream, one response at a time. — your editor

what's new

10/25/2026 The edition gains its voices: every response can now be heard — each read in a voice cast for its writer, the missing numbers marked aloud in the editor's own. The readings stand on every response page and every writer's strand, and the whole river runs as a podcast in the audio feed; the river page carries it stitched into a single listen, end to end.

10/25/2026 The edition gains its reference shelf: an index of everyone and everything the work names, a glossary for the vocabulary of a vanished room, and a faq that answers the plain questions plainly.

10/25/2026 This snapshot is published: all 212 responses, collated line by line against the 2000 witness. Nothing added, nothing renumbered.

10/25/2026 item8.org registered, twenty-seven years after the fact. The work finally has the address it always had: item 8.

10/25/2026 Inventory and collation completed: 212 responses by 19 writers; 29 numbers do not survive and are printed as gaps.

08/31/1998 Last response to item 8 on the Meta Network.

09/02/1997 Item 8, called Coelaboration, opened in artist on the Meta Network. It ran on goodwill and Caucus.
